Youth of the Year named by club

This year’s junior youth of the year for the Boys & Girls Club of Livingston County is Harper E.


The Prairie Central student has been attending the Boys & Girls Club since 2021 and likes to draw and create art. Harper loves to be with her family and friends and her favorite thing about the club is helping younger kids.


Lindsay H. is the senior youth of the year. The Pontiac Township High School senior has been attending the club since fifth grade. Lindsay is involved in the Livingston Area Career Center early childhood education program. Lindsay is in the National Technical Honor Society and is a model student at PTHS. Her favorite thing about the club is being able to work with all of the children.


Next up for the youth of the year winners is the state level, then regionals and finally qualifying for the National Youth of the Year in D.C.


Local residents Al Slagel, Mary Slagel and Brad Gulliford were chosen to judge the Youth of the Year contest.


“It’s been a pleasure meeting all of the contestants we had,” said Al Slagel.


Slagel notes their aspiring stories and accomplishments were amazing for their ages.


“We can learn a lot from each other,” he added.


Gulliford calls the youth inspiring.


“These kids are absolute role models.”


The other youth of the year candidate included Kaisha E. who is a junior at Pontiac Township High School. She has attended the club since fourth grade and is involved in many activities like Key Club, Peers in Action, Student Council, Unified Peers, church Sunday School and Operation Snowball. She is a top student at PTHS.


Other junior youth of the year candidates included Beckett A., a student in Pontiac District 429. He has attended the club since Kindergarten. Beckett likes computer programming, STEM and robotics. Olivia R. is a student in Pontiac District 429. She has been attending the club since she was in Kindergarten and likes math, art and loves to be around friends and family.


All of the youth had the chance to speak at this week’s Boys & Girls Club of Livingston County Great Futures Breakfast in Pontiac.
