Youth meeting held in Yorkville
State Senator Sue Rezin (R-Morris) welcomed around 40 high school students from 9 schools to the Yorkville Public Library on October 23 as part of her annual Youth Advisory Council.
“I believe it’s essential for young people to see that they’re capable of achieving their goals,” said Senator Rezin. “This program not only helps me connect with the next generation but also provides an opportunity to support their goals and empower them to make a difference.”
Senator Rezin’s Youth Advisory Council is a hands-on experience designed to teach local area students about public policy, state government, and leadership. High schools within the 38th Senate District nominate students who have shown an interest in government and public service.
“I think it was really great that Senator Rezin has us here because we don't get that much power in what our government has to say,” said Sandwich High School Student Keegan Herren. “So, I feel like it's great that she's here, she's listening to us, and she's making the effort to reach out to her constituents, no matter how young they are.”
“I wanted to attend the Youth Advisory Council because I think a lot of people don’t realize how much government can be involved in ongoing issues and how many positive changes can be made through our government systems,” said Oswego High School Student Laila Green. “I would absolutely recommend more students attend this event because there’s no reason not to do it.”
In the morning students heard from successful community leaders, including Matthew Klein, a local business owner, marketer, and storyteller, and Christina Van Yperen, President & CEO of the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce.
