Veterans support group to meet

Local veterans can enjoy camaraderie through a local Veterans Peer Support Group which will meet in Pontiac this week.

The group meets this Wednesday (Sept. 11) at the Livingston County Veterans Assistance Commission, 110 W. Water Street, Suite 4 in Pontiac on the lower level. A male veterans group meets from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. with the female group meeting 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

This is through a collaboration with the Peoria Veterans center.

“We want to eliminate barriers for veterans who are seeking mental health services,” notes Justin Anweiler of the center.

It isn’t just about mental health services as the event is also about community and fellowship – something veterans often miss from their times of service.

“I see it all the time in our Peoria location. They get together in the front, have coffee and it seems like that experience does more good than actual therapy they are doing.”

Vet Centers are community-based counseling centers that provide a wide range of social and psychological services, including professional readjustment counseling to eligible veterans, active duty service members, including National Guard and Reserve components and their families.

Refreshments are provided and anyone is welcome to come whether or not they have a reservation. For more information or to reserve a spot for Wednesday’s group meeting, call 815-844-7378.
