Sports Roundup: Illini win, Cubs/Sox lose

Illini fans are having a good day as number-three Illinois upset second-seeded Iowa State in Boston Thursday night 72-69 in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

Terrance Shannon Jr. led the scoring with 29 points and had five rebounds and three steals. Coleman Hawkins had 12 points and six rebounds.

The Illini now face top overall seed UConn in the East Region of the Elite Eight this Saturday in what should be a great game.

Thursday wasn’t such a great day for local Major League baseball fans as the Cubs and White Sox both lost their openers.

The Cubs blew a late lead and lost 4-3 against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field. The Cubs scored to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the ninth inning before giving up a game-tying home run. Jonah Heim had the game-winning run for Texas in the bottom of the tenth inning.

The White Sox had a 1-0 loss to the Tigers on MLB opening day at Guaranteed Rate Field. Garret Crochet struck out eight and gave up one run on five hits. The Sox begin the season 0-1 and will send Mike Soroka to the mound as they battle Detroit Friday.
