New owner, name for Livingston Stone

Livingston Stone near Pontiac is under new ownership with a renewed focus on agriculture, although the owner is no stranger to the business.
Longtime employee Chris Matich and his wife took over ownership earlier this year.
“I’ve been there forever and started working there in 1989,” recalls Matich.
The family that had owned the business since 1946 wanted to get out of it, according to Matich.
“It wasn’t like we bought a bar, car dealership or a restaurant – we basically bought my job in a way.”
The company is mainly ag focused under the new name of, “Livingston Stone Company dba C&a40 Calcium Products.” They have moved away from selling gravel products and now focus on ag lime for farmers and the production of granular Calcium products for animal feed throughout the year.
Another surprising product sold by them is an ultra-fine powder that is used in a variety of ways, including asphalt for state highway construction.
“It’s a niche market – few others do it in the Midwest” explained Matich. “We are selling product to Canada, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois and Iowa even.”
The business supplies big players such as Purina, Ridley Feeds and Belstra Milling along with all the local feed mills to the tune of 70 plus loads per week. Matich believes this benefits the business and especially all of the local feed mills and farmers by ensuring there will be a close Calcium source for many years to come.
“We are able to do it because of our great employees and that is going to be our model going forward,” he added.
How did they get the name C&a40 Calcium Products? The atomic symbol for Calcium is Ca and it’s atomic weight is 40.078.
“I’m Chris, my wife is Amy so we are going to do a capital C and a small a and 40 is better than 40.078” explained Matich.
While Matich does not want to forget the history of Livingston Stone, he still wants to move forward with the new name.
