Todd Palmer really enjoys his time at the Livingston County Ag Fair.
The member of the Waldo Peppy 4-H Club shows goats and has a few other projects in the Humiston Building such as an automatic can crusher he created.
“I love it here, it’s a great place to be,” Palmer said of the fair at 4-H Park.
Palmer’s advice to the youngsters is to not be scared to try new things in 4-H.
“You’ll be more into it each year after,” he added.
Palmer hopes to attend a trade school for electricity or welding.
Zane Witzig, also of the Waldo Peppy Club, brought a creative writing project to the fair. He creates rhymed poems which are judged. It is his fourth year doing poetry.
“This year, I made a theme around poetry itself, kind of.”
Witzig has shown chickens but learned he did not like birds so he showed pigs about seven years then decided to do more poetry. Witzig plans to go to college to study something in the math or science field but he does appreciate literature and writing.
A little bit of everything is on display inside the Humiston Building – from Legos to leather work.
“We also have animals and vet science projects going on along with geology,” explained Alcha Corban with University of Illinois Extension.
A big jump was observed in the number of horticulture and floriculture projects this year.
“A great thing about 4-H is that we have something for every kid and what they are interested in,” noted Corban.
The projects on display at the fair weren’t created overnight as some have spent hours, weeks or even months working on them.
