Enforcement increased for Memorial Day

Holiday traffic enforcements are being stepped up for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend.

The “Click It or Ticket” effort is about saving lives as police want seatbelt use to be second nature for all drivers and passengers. Consequences of not wearing or improperly wearing a seatbelt are clear. In 2022, Illinois had 300 fatalities involving unrestrained passengers.

Nationally, it is estimated that 91.9 percent of people use seatbelts, while Illinois boasts a 93 percent seatbelt compliance rate.

“Whether you’re driving around the corner or across the nation, remember to buckle up every time,” said Bloomington Police Chief Jamal Simington. “Remember to Click It or Ticket” day and night, every trip, every time.”

Federal highway safety funds help with the “Click It or Ticket” campaign which is administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
