Centennial Plaza in the works downtown

(The area behind the Route 66 Museum in Pontiac where a 'Centennial Plaza' is planned)

The centennial of Route 66 will be here before we know it and Pontiac will be ready.

Plans are underway for a “Centennial Plaza” in the parking lot behind the Route 66 Museum and near the famous mural of the Mother Road. The nearby Waldmire Bus, or road yacht, is another big attraction nearby.

The city wants this to be a plaza, or place where people stay around a while after visiting the attractions in town. Art components are planned along with seating.

“We’ll have elements that will attract people all of the time, not just stop and go,” explained Director of Community Enrichment Liz Vincent during the May Downtown Pontiac Huddle meeting.

Initial ideas have been shown to city leaders following a Committee of the Whole meeting and the planning continues. This will be a big change to the downtown area in time for the special year of 2026 when Route 66 celebrates its 100th birthday.
