Bill would block certain mascot names
A bill is under consideration in Illinois to drop Native American mascot names from K-12 schools.
If the bill passes in Springfield, schools would not have to comply with the law until they renovate athletic areas or change sports uniforms. State Representative Laura Faver Dias has said Native American mascots “dehumanize” a group of people and should not be in schools.
Some researchers claim mascot names such as Indians and Warriors harm Native American children.
