NORMAL – Firefighters in Normal battled freezing temperatures Saturday afternoon during a multi-alarm blaze at Sugar Creek Apartments on south Linden Street.

All tenants were accounted for with no reports of injuries, but the fire destroyed or heavily damaged 12 apartments. Initial reports came in at 1:24 p.m. of an apartment on fire on the third floor of the three-story complex, near the intersection of Linden and Vernon.

Heavy fire was reported coming from the roof by the first arriving units and more resources were immediately called for. Off-duty Normal firefighters were called in while the Bloomington Fire Department sent an engine company, two aerial ladder trucks and a warming and rehabilitation unit.
