Moderate flooding for Vermilion

PONTIAC – A flood warning continues for the Vermilion River at Pontiac downstream to Route 23 near Streator.

The warning remains in effect until Tuesday morning, according to a public safety announcement from the Pontiac Fire Department. The river stage was 16 feet at 10:45 a.m. Monday and flood stage is 14 feet. Moderate flooding is occurring and still expected.

At 16.5 feet, low lying sections of Southside Cemetery are inundated.

Officials say to never drive around barricades and evacuate immediately if told to do so. Also, listen to NOAA weather radio or local alerting systems for current emergency information and instructions. If your car is trapped in rapidly moving water, you should stay inside.

People should also avoid wading in floodwater which can be contaminated with dangerous debris. Underground or downed power lines can also electrically charge the water, say the experts.
