Officials warn of fentanyl dangers

The Bloomington Police Department and the McLean County Coroner's Office want to issue a warning to

local residents about the dangers of fentanyl and specifically cocaine mixed with fentanyl.

What is fentanyl? "Pharmaceutical fentanyl is a synthetic opioid pain reliever, approved for treating severe pain, typically advanced cancer pain. It is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. It is prescribed in the form of transdermal patches or lozenges and can be diverted for misuse and abuse in the United States. However, most recent cases of fentanyl-related harm, overdose, and death in the U.S. are linked to illegally made fentanyl. It is sold through illegal drug markets for its heroin-like effect. It is often mixed with heroin and/or cocaine as a combination product—with or without the user’s knowledge—to increase its euphoric effects. - source CDC"

Please be aware of the deadly effects of fentanyl and the unintended consequences of ingesting substances such as cocaine. What can you do? Refer those with addition issues to call PATH at 2-1-1. PATH will connect them to our local resources.

During an emergency or an overdose situation, call 9-1-1. Local law enforcement and emergency responders are commonly equipped with NARCAN or other "opioid antagonists” that are used to counter the effects of opioid overdose. The faster we can respond, the more likely emergency responders can administer an opioid antagonist.
