Obituary: Tibbs

Rita A. Tibbs, 91, of Pontiac, passed away Wednesday, January 16, 2019, at 12:54 a.m. at Evenglow Lodge in Pontiac.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, January 21, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pontiac with Father David Sabel officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Pontiac.

Visitation will be Sunday, January 20, 2019, from 2:30 to 5:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 2:00 p.m. at Duffy-Baier-Snedecor Funeral Home in Pontiac.

Duffy-Baier-Snedecor Funeral Home, Pontiac, is in charge of arrangements.

Rita was born July 28, 1927, in Pontiac, IL to Matthew L. and Rebecca E. (Mowry) Nolan. She married John Albert Tibbs on June 5, 1947 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pontiac. He passed away May 25, 2000.

She is survived by her children, Richard D. (Ellen) Tibbs of Carlock, IL, Karen Forbes of Cottonwood, AZ, Marie (Bob) Kane of Pontiac, IL, and John Tibbs of Pontiac, IL; grandchildren, Sean Tibbs, Corrie Tibbs, Callie Hubly, Melissa Durbin, Tessa Arndt, Valerie Lebo, Tanner Tibbs, and Parker Tibbs; and great-grandchildren, Teagan, Cael, Aiden, Axel, Joe, Jake, Kane, Zack, Zelda, and Annika.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; three sons in infancy; brothers, Leo Nolan, Francis Nolan, Mattie Nolan, and Jim Nolan; and sisters, Mary Mies, Margaret Somers, and her twin, Rosie Duffy.

Rita was a graduate of Pontiac Township High School. She farmed with her husband, John, until 1959, when they moved to Pontiac. In addition to being a homemaker, she worked at The Square, Hornsby’s, and Alco.

Rita was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Pontiac and the St. Mary’s Women’s Guild.
