Man indicted for attempted murder


NORMAL – A 31-year-old Latham man was indicted by a McLean County grand jury on a charge of attempted murder.

Bond has been set at $50,000 for Walter Sweeney, who is accused of confronting his victim and displaying a handgun back in December. During the alleged confrontation, police say Sweeney pulled the trigger on the gun but it failed to discharge. No injuries were reported and not shots were fired, according to Normal Police.

In addition to attempted murder, Sweeney faces charges of attempted aggravated discharge of a firearm and aggravated battery in a public place. The case remains under investigation and the Normal Police Department is asking for the public’s assistance.
